Baristart Coffee is a beloved Japanese café known for its rich, creamy drinks and delightful desserts. Every visit feels like a little escape to Hokkaido, thanks to their signature Biei Jersey milk sourced from Brown Jersey cows. I personally love their lattes and café mochas, the perfect balance of bold coffee flavor and sweet creaminess that keeps me coming back.

I was pleasantly surprised by Baristart Coffee’s Hokkaido Carbonara, a blended take on Japanese and Italian cuisine that felt rich without being too heavy. The pasta carried the creaminess of the Hokkaido milk sauce well, while the onsen egg gave each bite a savoury, rounded depth. I ended with a vanilla ice cream and bear-shaped cream puffs; the meal needed something softer and both desserts gave me the perfectly light finish.

What stole the show was the Croissant French Toast, the custard-soaked bread felt rich, but the yuzu marmalade kept it from feeling too heavy. I was also taken with their spicy crab meat on the side, it made the table feel more complete without losing that easy café comfort.

A split-view image featuring the cozy, flag-decorated interior of Ramen Keisuke Tori King in Tanjong Pagar on the left, and a close-up of their signature rich, dark chicken ramen broth with a whole roasted chicken leg on the right.

Ramen Keisuke Tori King is a place where the bowl leaves its strongest impression. The soup carries the depth of chicken bones, chicken feet, vegetables, and Japanese seaweed simmered for hours, giving it a full-bodied flavour that feels tied to the Japanese food culture. I asked for a boiled egg to be added and it really did rounded out the bowl with a softer, richer finish.

Instead of shredded chicken, they have chicken chashu, which is a tender bite that pairs well with the crispy batter of one of my favorite side of theirs which is their Deep Fried Chicken. I don’t think anyone could leave without appreciating how the restaurant feels lively but still polished, with the kind of portions that make it better for sharing than eating alone.

If there’s any food on the menu deserving of a long queue it would be their beef wellington. The pastry, beef, mushroom, and spinach make it feel indulgent without being too heavy, and I’m glad I added foie gras, it was the winning detail of the meal. This spot delivered the kind of French-leaning richness that made my dining experience feel like I was at a special occasion.
