I noticed something funny after dinner.
Nobody was ready to leave, but nobody was talking about the meal we had just finished anymore.
Instead, someone asked, “So where should we go next week?”
It started as a simple question. Then everyone joined in.
Someone suggested trying a new Japanese restaurant. Someone else mentioned a hawker stall they had been saving. Another friend started talking about a place they had walked past many times but never entered.
The funny thing was, we were already full. We had just spent the evening sharing dishes, comparing favourites, and debating which plate deserved another order. Yet somehow, the conversation naturally moved to the next meal.
I think that is one of the things I love about eating in Singapore. Food rarely ends when the plates are cleared.

A dinner can become a recommendation. A recommendation can become a weekend plan. A simple mention of a dish can send someone across the island searching for their next favourite spot.
I have experienced this many times, whether it was after sharing zi char dishes with friends or discovering a restaurant that introduced us to flavours we had not tried before. The meal itself becomes part of a larger conversation that continues long after we leave.
The best food experiences do not always finish with the last dish. Sometimes they begin with the question, “What should we eat next?”
Maybe that is why Singapore’s dining culture feels so connected. We do not only eat to satisfy hunger. We eat to share discoveries, exchange recommendations, and create reasons to meet again.
The next restaurant is often already being chosen before the current one is forgotten.
And sometimes, that is the sign of a meal that gave everyone something to look forward to.
